SS Orduna Ships Bearing Corrector

A ships compass bearing corrector that was used upon the SS Orduna.

Made by the Marconi International Marine Communication company c1910

In original wooden case with operating instructions attached.

Excellent condition for age. Showing slight signs of use and age.

Cased size: 16cm x16cm x 7cm.

The SS Orduna has an incredible history. Built by Harland & Wolff, Belfast in 1913. Providing a passenger service from Liverpool to New York for Cunard.

Orduna spent later years in service to the military during WW2. Recognised by the Holocaust Encyclopedia as playing a pivotal role in rescuing a number of Jews from the "Voyage of the damned" in May 1939.

In 1940 the ship was used to transport evacuees from Britain due to the prospect of an imminent invasion.

From 1941 to 1945 she was in service as a troop ship.

In the Autumn of 1945 she brought back prisoners and internees from the far east (some 1700) arriving in Liverpool where a memorial to the ships involved is now on the Liverpool waterfront (15th October 2011).

Orduna was decommissioned in 1950 and sold for scrap in 1951.
